Title: Thick & Thin
Series: The Chubby Girl Chronicles
Author: Tabatha Vargo
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release: January 21, 2020
We promised to stay best friends through thick and thin, but that was before the kiss that changed it all. Before he went off to war and left me behind angry and bitter. Now he’s back, turning my world upside down, but I’m not the love-sick tomboy he left behind. And even though he always promised through thick and thin, something tells me I’m a little thicker than he had in mind.
I made promises to Jenny, but I’m not the boy I was when I left for Afghanistan. I’m broken, scarred, and not nearly good enough to hold her heart. I tried to do the right thing and stay away, but my family needs me, which means I have to go home. Jenny hates me, and maybe that’s a good thing because I only want to do right by her. That means keeping my hands off her newly rounded curves. No matter how hard that might be.
I have been in love with the Chubby Girl Chronicles since On the Plus Sides release date. I was super excited when book two came out but was a tad disappointed at the second installment in the series. This lead to some worry on my end that Thick & Thin was going to be disappointing as well. Thankfully it wasn't. Thick & Thin was a beautiful story I greatly adored and read twice immediately after finishing it.
Jenny Micahel's and Joshua Black have been friends forever. They've grown up together and crossed all the developmental milestones together. During the summer between high school and college, everything changes. Jenny is looking at Joshua differently and Joshua can't stand to see anyone looking at her.
I loved the first part of this book so much since I was worried we'd see their whole relationship build-up in flashbacks. That didn't happen at all and it was a nice and refreshing part of this book I greatly enjoyed.
Joshua doesn't want to be on the farm forever so he enlisted in the army and now is on a timeline with his time with Jenny. Joshua has a lot of struggles in this book. In the beginning, it's his feelings for Jenny and trying to reconcile that he doesn't just have 'friendly' feelings for her, but romantic feelings. Then later when he comes back from war with a whole slew of injuries both physical and mental. It hurt my heart to see him being so mean to Jenny after he comes back, but it made the pay off so worth it.
Jenny is a character I loved instantly. She's one of those characters that in real life you'd love to be around because she's so confident but also nice. I really enjoyed reading about her life and struggles and her strength. I love how she never broke down about her secret even though it would have saved her from a lot of pain.
Plus, getting to see more of Lilly and Devin which just had me feeling ecstatic. I really appreciated that we all got to see where some of our favorite characters ended up. I don't feel like you need to read the first two books in this series to read this one, but if you have this story gives a nice peek at the characters we fell in love with in the previous books.
Loved this book from start to finish. I laughed, cried, and swooned because these sexy scenes be smokin' hot. Thick & Thin can be read as a standalone from the rest of the Chubby Girl Chronicles. Great storytelling and really fun relatable characters.
