After reading for a long while I have noticed a trend with books that take forever to release sequels in their series that I tend to lose interest in their books. Or at least lose excitement for them. When an author promotes a book for eons and sets it up on Goodreads I get so excited. I constantly check for updates and I have to say after about a year passes I begin to lose my excitement. I initially noticed this with the Night World series by L.J. Smith. I read them back in high school, so between the years of 2008 and 2011. The fourth book was on Goodreads and I got so excited. Now, it's 2019 and the book hasn't come out. I don't know it's because there are so many books coming out that my excitement wanes or if it's something else.
Here are some examples:
Cora Carmack published the first book in the Rusk University series in 2014. The second book came out in 2014 as well and the third one came out in 2015. She put on Goodreads there would be two more books in the series and the fourth book was supposed to come out in 2016. It didn't. Now we've gotten to 2019 and Cora Carmack continues to push back the publication.
I don't know if it would be as bad if she wasn't publishing numerous other books instead of finally putting out All Closed Out like she said she would nearly four years ago. Her book Roar came out in 2017 and the sequel is planned to release in August of this year (2019). It just makes it seem like it's not going to come out and it makes me feel less excited about the release.
H.M. Ward released the first Demon Kissed book in 2011. It was one of the first series I started reading after I graduated. Books two and three came out in 2011 and books four, five, and six came out in 2012. Book 7 was supposed to release in 2013, but at present, it has no release date or cover. This is not the first series. that H.M. Ward has simply skipped over writing more books for. She also wrote a Twisted Tales series that she released in 2012 and has since published over 50 books, none of which have to do with either series.
I fell in love with the Chubby Girl Chronicles with book one. Book two had a cover and release date in 2014. Then 2014 rolled by, then 2015, then 2016 and then finally 2017 was here and it looked like it was going to be another year without a release, but BAM Tabatha Vargo released the second book and has plans for a third. I was so excited back in 2014 and now the second book is out and while I own the book I'm not very excited about reading it.
Fallen Angel series it's a fantastic one, it's just not worth getting into now I don't feel due to having no release date in sight.
So here's my question for you.
How long is too long?
Is there such a thing as too long?
Do any of you ever lose excitement over a book when it doesn't come out for a long time?
