Don't Judge Me by My Books Cover

Do you ever get questions about what you're reading? Or whenever someone asks what you're reading you try to get out of answering? Do you ever get rude comments about your books?

I find that a lot of people are really judgmental over the books I read. As if being judged by what I'm wearing, who I'm dating, and so on wasn't enough! Now you're judging my reading material.

I never guessed when I started reading YA novels, or even the new rising NA genre that I would get comments about what I'm reading in my spare time. Being an English minor for my own personal form of torture I read not only the materials in my classes, but also find time to read in my spare time...yes my studying time. Honestly though I always hear the rudest comments when talking to people about what I'm reading and all I can think is:

Seriously. I had an extremely bad experience in my class one day when we started discussing different genres of books and this is where it went all down hill. A girl exclaims she doesn't understand how YA(young adult) is even a genre. She then went on to explain that she was too "advanced for an immature novel like YA." I tried explaining that YA is an age group just like adult fiction, and children's books. Then I asked her what YA books she's read thinking you know maybe she just hadn't read a good one. She tells me that she's NEVER read a YA book ever.

WTF bitch how dare you pass judgement on something you have absolutely no freaking knowledge about!

Sad thing was I had no back-up from anyone in that room! Even the teacher was saying how she didn't understand the fad of YA books or the new "Supernatural world fetish" everyone seemed to be on.

Sadly I get stuff like this ALL THE F'ING time. No lie. People ask me what books I read since I claim to love books and I list some off and I get comments like: "Oh like young adult porn?" or "Aren't you a little old for that?" or "Oh, you mean books like Twilight?" Um no no and no again!

Honestly people just because you read Jane Austen or Charles Dickens doesn't mean your books are better than mine.

The comments have gotten so bad I stop mentioning I like to read anymore. If people do catch me reading I just say "oh the usual" and quickly change the subject.

I hate that I feel afraid of the harsh comments that I hide my love of books. No matter where I go people are constantly judging me by what I read.

Supernatural stuff is my thing and I didn't get that interest from reading books. My mom introduced me to the stuff, taking me to see action films and movies with superheroes.Yet I bet if I said I love action movies they wouldn't judge me then..well they might.

It sucks. People think all kinds of thinks about the books I read and ALWAYS relate it back to Twilight. I'm not saying Twilight sucked, I'm not saying it's the antichrist of book land I'm just saying that it's freaking annoying.

So yeah that's my rant of the week. I am honestly just sick and tired of the constant judgement of YA or NA books. I don't think they're any more or less important than Adult books, or historical fiction or whatever else people find interesting.

So after all that this is what I have to say:

So in other words to the judgmental ass hats out there who judge peoples based on their books and well anything else I have this to say to you:

Thank you everyone who stops by I hope you are all having a splendid Wednesday!!

Comment and let me know if you've had similar experiences in your life. 8)

  1. You go girl. You should never be ashamed of what you read.
I can totally sympathize. I have had people judge me too on what I read and write, and at first it bothered me, but not any more. Now I just shrug off their comments and focus on what pleases me.
