Introduction

Most people have the best of intentions when they begin a new journey of self-discovery by reading books such as this one. So you may ask yourself, if there are so many books written about improving your life, why are so many people, and most of the same people, not experiencing a better life, even after reading multiple books about it?
There is a simple fact: No matter how much you read about improving your life, no matter how much you think about it, entertain it, and internalize portions of the information, the vast majority of people never take the steps necessary to actually get any benefit from what they read. Let’s face it…life happens. It is human nature, we read some, we put the book down, we experience life, and we may or may not get back to the book until possibly hours, days, or weeks later, if ever. The overall likelihood of remembering all we read and taking action on it is negligible, if not zero.
As the Ebbinghaus “Forgetting Curve” explains, memory, and specifically forgetting, is exponential in nature with regard to the time away from what we read.1 Per this curve, it is often quoted, we remember only about 54 percent of what we read after just one day! In just one week’s time, this amount shrinks to about 21 percent. So you can imagine, if we only remember a fraction of what we read over time, what is the true likelihood we will ever take action on just the small fraction of what we do remember?
This is the problem with books designed just for reading. We are up against human biology and human behavior—and we are fighting a losing battle. It is time to win! This book is designed to solve this problem. It is created to be a living and working, everyday document, a blueprint, if you will. It contains exercises to help you focus your thoughts, entertain you, allow you to internalize the material, and take action at the same time.
For this reason, I am asking you to make a commitment. This book will do you no good if you just read it, or even just internalize the information. I am challenging you to commit to doing the exercises and taking action in your own life. 
Countless hours were spent wrestling with creating the best title with one purpose in mind—to help as many people as possible to have the success they dream of in life. How do you capture people’s attention with a myriad of other titles on the shelf? 
Originally, the title was, GA=T+E: How to Live a Motivational, Inspirational, Influential Life—Have Happiness and Help Others. I mention this because, as you will see, the spirit of these words permeates and resonates throughout this book. The challenge with coming up with a new title is keeping the original purpose, being descriptive, catchy, yet making it memorable enough so people will find your book and tell others about it. 
I want to thank my editor for her hard work, comments, and constructive feedback. Per her direction, I chose a more memorable title that still embodies the original spirit, Mentor Me: GA=T+E—A Formula to Fulfill Your Greatest Achievement. 
Mentor Me has a dual meaning, depending upon which word you emphasize. For example, mentor me is a request to be mentored. It is a reminder we are all students of life and we need to be humble, asking others for the opportunity to glean from their wisdom. 
I have found we can all learn something from just about anyone, if we approach others with an open mind, take the time to get to know them, seek out, and listen for what they can teach us. The better students we are in life, the better teachers we can eventually become, as we gain knowledge through life’s experiences. 
Conversely, if the second word is emphasized, mentor me, it is a statement—me, I am a mentor. Mentors are people we want to emulate; they attract, motivate, inspire, influence us—we look up to them, admire them as role models, and seek their help. In this way, the title, Mentor Me, keeps with the original spirit of the first title, yet makes it memorable, meaningful, and descriptive in a more succinct fashion. It also carries with it its own message; be both a mentor to others and have the willingness to be coached and mentored as well. 
If you truly want to have the qualities of a mentor, live a motivational, inspirational, influential, life—to have happiness, help others—to fulfill your Greatest Achievement (GA), then do the exercises in this book. Take the action steps within these pages and you can have the life you dream about.
This book is not for everyone, because not everyone is willing to make the commitment, to do what it takes, to take action to attain their dreams. If you do not want to improve your life, this book is not for you. Not everyone can be a member of the group that achieves their dreams in life.
This book is for doers—those who commit to having the life they want, who do the exercises, who use this book as a living/working document, and who take action to make a better tomorrow for themselves. Are you committed to this?
Make a promise, a vow to yourself, to create your better tomorrow. The first exercise I will ask you to do is to physically show your commitment. This book is your living and working document; your blueprint—so own it. Write in the upper left-hand inner cover of your book the following: “I am committed to taking action, GA= T + E”. Then sign your name next to this statement proclaiming your commitment. Under this statement write, “This book belongs to:” and then write your name, your address, and your phone number. You are taking ownership of your future. If you purchased the e-book version of this book, buy a bound notebook, write the title of the book on the cover, then follow the steps above in your notebook.
Moreover, this book has an added feature to help you take action, unlike so many of the other books out there—we are going to make this a social experience. We are creating a movement, a society of people who are going to make a better tomorrow for themselves, who will achieve happiness, and who will help others. As this book is the GATE to your tomorrow, so you too can help motivate, inspire, and influence others by being their GATE to help them achieve their dreams and attain their Peak of Happiness.
Carry this book with you, and when you see others also carrying this book, break the ice by asking them, “Have you made the commitment to take action?” Introduce yourself, and then discuss your hopes and dreams for the future. Share your lifetime goal, your Greatest Achievement (GA), and your one-year goal(s). Discuss the ideas and concepts found in this book, as well as your personal experiences. Share what you have written in your books with each other. You have common ground to begin a relationship with someone new. This will help you meet like-minded individuals who are also committed to achieve their dreams in life. You are a part of something much, much bigger: a social movement of people who will make both their own lives better and a better place for those around them.
In addition to meeting like-minded people in the library, in bookstores, on the street, on the bus, in your office building, at work, wherever you see someone carrying this book, etc., connect with people through social media like Facebook and Skype. Meet each other and help each other attain your Greatest Achievement (GA) in life and your Peak of Happiness.
I started a Facebook group to help facilitate this, as well: GA=T+E; come connect and meet others like you, start your own Facebook group, or use other social media to create your own forum. Together, we can create a network of people who take control of their lives and who take action to achieve all they want in life.
I designed this book to be different, to increase the likelihood of people’s success, to help as many people as possible. We are all in this together—no one is alone. We belong and we are members of this movement, the group in society that will have the lives they want—the lives they dream about. Can you see why you will have a greater likelihood of success by taking action with this book than many of the others out there?
Tell others about this book and add your own experiences. Together, we will help people improve their lives—both in person, in the physical world, as well as in the virtual world, through social media.
The first two chapters of this book lay the foundation for the rest of the material. The material is laid out in such a way as to build on what comes before it, so if you skip over some sections or go out of order, you will not get the same benefit as if you read the book from beginning to end. So please, lay the foundation first with the first two chapters. After you read the entirety of the book, do the exercises, and take action, there will be sections you will want to refer back to as you internalize and utilize this information, using this book as your living and working dossier.

The Author


   Ken Poirot grew up on Long Island, New York in the quaint village of Northport. After graduating from Cornell University with a B.S. in Microbiology, he moved to Houston, Texas to pursue his Ph.D. studies in Cancer Research at MD Anderson Cancer Center through UT Health Science Center. Upon receiving a US Patent for his research, Lipid Complexed Topoisomerase I Inhibitors, he left graduate school for a career in financial services.

     Over the last two decades, he worked for many of the top financial services firms--some better known New York Stock Exchange-listed companies like American Express, Charles Schwab, Merrill Lynch (now part of Bank of America), JP Morgan Chase, as well as some smaller New York Stock Exchange-listed companies like Cullen/Frost Bankers (NYSE: CFR) and Guaranty Bank (now part of BBVA, NYSE: BBVA).

     As the Senior Vice President and Sales Manager for Frost Investment Services, the brokerage division of Frost Bank (NYSE:CFR), he led his department to four consecutive years of double- digit revenue growth, increasing revenue by over 83% while substantially increasing the profit margin from approximately 27% to 37%. During this same time period, his financial advisors increased their individual production from an average of less than $25,000 in revenue per month to over $41,000. He achieved similar results at various other firms, including Guaranty Bank and JPMorgan Chase, consistently increasing the sales of his territories/producers by double-digits as a regional manager and personal/professional coach.
