TBR Review: The Fiery Heart by Richelle Mead

Title: The Fiery Hearts
Series: Bloodlines #4
Hardcover, 420 pages
Published by Penguin Group
Release date: November 19th, 2013

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabbles in magic and serves to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives.

In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her...

But the struggle isn't over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there's still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure — and re-education — looms larger than ever.

Pulses will race throughout this smoldering fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where no secret is safe.

My Review:
I have finally started and finished The Fiery Heart. I swear it has taken me forever to get back to reading this series. I have to say it took me forever to get through this fourth installment into the Bloodlines series.

Reading about Adrian and Sydney in a real relationship was super cute and I enjoyed how the relationship was written. Adrian and Sydney had their own lives but were also in a close relationship that had to stay hidden. I enjoyed reading about Adrian and Sydney’s lives apart from each other as well as when they were together. Their relationship isn’t rushed and while they’re together they still have issues and nothing is perfect.

I have to say this was my least favorite in the series and I almost didn’t want to continue reading the rest. Thankfully the book ended on a cliffhanger and so I HAD to know what happened next.

Adrian has come so far in these books and I think he makes a lot of progress throughout each story to become someone better for not just Sydney, but also for himself. Adrian struggles a lot with Spirit through this story, and then makes some huge changes that I thought made him even stronger. I just loved how far Adrian has come and how he continues to struggle.

Sydney has come so far as well. When first meeting her in Vampire Academy she was skittish and wary of vampires and wanted nothing to do with any of them. Now seeing her in The Fiery Heart I enjoyed how strong and independent she is from the Alchemists and how much she’s grown to care for all the characters. At the end of the story, she proves to love them all and makes a huge sacrifice for them.

I think my biggest issue with this story was that it dragged in areas where I didn’t feel it had to. I know a lot of spots were setting things up for the future books and that I still needed to know what was going on with the other characters, but The Fiery Heart felt a little overwhelming at times, and other times the story dragged for me.

I enjoyed the new addition to the story such as Neil and Zoe. Zoe I felt was added in to the story to show how far Sydney has come and to kind of show, all the secondary characters that as well. Zoe got on my nerves a lot of the time, but I understood her motives. She wanted to please her father more than anything else and so she ended up doing some super crappy things. Despite that, you can tell there was a lot of love for Sydney that Zoe had for her. Neil was interesting, but didn’t play a huge role in this story. I feel like he will later, but he was interesting to see how formal some of the dhampirs can be since we usually read about the more rebellious ones.

Overall I’m giving this a 3.5/5 bats. I liked a lot, but this one dragged a bit too much for me and felt like they added a whole lot into one book. All the characters were great and I like the easy flow of the writing.
